Scream Queens, created by Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy (three white men), premiered this month and I have to say I have mixed feelings about it.
I've honestly laughed out loud and cringed at the show so far and although it's funny, also unfortunately offensive in a PLETHORA of ways.
I'm currently grappling with these feelings for this show and I hope to have some more conclusive thoughts as I continue or discontinue watching.
I like to call this show "PRETTY LITTLE LIARS ON LAUGHING GAS..."
Here are the five questions I keep asking myself when I watch this weird hybrid.
And if you're looking for my recommendation all I shall say is watch at your own risk.
1. Is this racist?
The amount of racist things the main character Chanel, played by Emma Roberts, says is almost astonishing. I almost find myself getting a little desensitized to it and it makes me wonder what role does her character's racism play in the show?
We know she's racist from the beginning but seriously? The fact that she calls her maid "White Mammy" is more than cringe worthy. I just don't see how this adds to character development, plot or story.
2. Why are the characters so BASIC?
ALL THE CHARACTERS IN THIS SHOW ARE BASIC AF.
Just straight up caricatures or tricksters or mean. I have to admit that sometimes this is funny. But it's also incredibly annoying...
Perhaps this is the work of satire and irony? I've read enough theater and performance analysis to know that two dimensional, or in some cases one dimensional, characters are often used by the storyteller to talk about a specific theme or to share a message with the audience.
In instances like these the interior life of the character doesn't matter. Personally, when I am not given a gateway to feel empathy or identification with the characters I find myself not connecting to the work. BUT, perhaps this is apart of the author's work and is meant to convey a message. Or maybe they just don't care.
3. WHY ALL THE SIZE-ISM/HOMOPHOBIA/SEXISM/ABELISM/AND OTHERS -ISMS?
Are there other jokes we can use?! I mean come on.... The oppressive language in this show is excessive.
4. Can we get more Jamie-Lee Curtis?
I mean for real. She is the most well developed and interesting character on the show in my opinion.
5. Do all black women really have to be portrayed like southern-attitudinal-Tyler Perry type knockoffs?
Cuz I'm done with it. LIKE DONE WITH DAT TROPE.
