If you are like me, at this point in the presidential election you are probably TIRED of anything relating to #Trump. BUT, I came across some incredible musical protest pieces against our Republican demagogue. It is truly incredible to listen to so many interpretations of sheer frustration with one of our presidential candidates, I hope these songs are the things that surface when historians look back at this embarrassing presidential campaign period, instead of the other not so "cool" parts.
Pussy Riot - "Make America Great Again"
"Let other people in
Listen to your women
Stop killing black children
Make America Great Again"
Pussy Riot, a Russian feminist punk rock group, is known for their political anthems and videos. This one uses parody, mildly disturbing imagery and Trump wigs to illustrate just how dangerous the implications of this election could be. The song is also catchy AF.
Lila Downs - "El Demagogo/ The Demagogue"
"And I pray to the ancestors’ love
Do not be fooled by this man’s foolish talk
The serpent woke again
In different times and places
There's a burning cross
Leading the mob
People in chains
He's a Quak circus act creeping from the past
He's the symbol of the monster we no longer want to be"
I am a HUGE Lila Downs fan. She is like the mother of all the natural and from the earth. As a Mexican singer with multiple awards, including a Grammy and four Latin Grammys, her music is often filled with social commentary. This particular song fluctuates between English and Spanish and is filled with admonishment and sheer power.
YG & Nipsey Hussle - "FDT (Fuck Donald Trump)"
I mean, what more can I say. The title speaks for itself.
YG about the release of the song:
"Secret Service hollered at the label, they asked if they could see the lyrics on my album to see if I'm talking about it on my album. 'Cause I'm talking about it on my album, they gon' try to take it off the shelf."
Sara Bareilles writes a song from the perspective of President Obama on this current election. The angel Leslie Odom Jr. (aka Aaron Burr, Hamilton) sings it for us. Enjoy!
